Indias digital growth, focusing on mobile connections, payments, and 5G rollout, requires enhancements in optic fibre, satellite connections, Wi-Fi networks, and public Wi-Fi hotspots. Balancing all these elements is crucial for sustainable progress.

The pilot project titled ‘Smart Gram Panchayat: Revolution towards Digitization of Gram Panchayat’ was launched with the aim to extend PM-WANI (Prime Minister’s Wi-Fi Access Network Interface) Service in all Gram Panchayats across Begusarai District in Bihar.

The Department of Telecommunications, in a release, stated that the PM-WANI Framework facilitates ease of doing business and encourages local shops and small establishments to become Wi-Fi Hotspot providers Public Data Office (PDO).

Notably, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) proposed the proliferation of broadband in India through public Wi-Fi hotspot recommendations in June 2020. Not just this, the Centre has now set a mammoth goal of 50 million public Wi-Fi hotspots by 2030, outlined in the ‘Bharat 6G Vision’ document.

Distributed through PMWANI, it can be a game changer in digital connectivity.

WIOM has raised $4 Mn in a seed funding round led by YourNest and 9Unicorns, with participation from Auxano and Omidyar India.
