Winter Moratorium News Today

As Memphis feels temperatures approaching freezing for the first time in a while, Memphis, Light, Gas & Water (MLGW) announced the return of their Winter Moratorium program.

Unlike winter, the summer electric shutoff moratoriums are fairly limited – but still leave people exposed to dangerous heat.

Sen. Zellnor Myrie (D-Brooklyn) and backers rallied Thursday in support of a bill that would prohibit sheriffs and marshals from executing eviction warrants statewide during the coldest part of the year.

During the colder temperatures, the program offers a way for Memphis senior and disabled customers to avoid disconnection if they get behind on their utility bills.
