The University of the Witwatersrand's student protest earlier this year paved the way for the EFF Students Command (EFFSC) victory with the organisation clinching eight out of the 13 students representative council (SRC) seats.

Former student leaders and EFF members have established a trade union to restore the dignity of working people across all sectors of society.

Students at the university took to the streets earlier this month over accommodation and historical debt.

This time the students are demanding that the university allow those owing R150,000 or less be allowed to register for the 2023 academic year. They also demand that NSFAS students in off-campus accommodation not be required to pay a deposit.

The Wits University Students’ Representative Council (SRC) and management have agreed to a mediation process and in the meantime allow academic programmes to continue as scheduled.

This follows meetings with the student leaders last week after they called a ceasefire on the two-week long shutdown at the university.

The students said they are worried about whether the university will grant them the time to catch up academically.

The student representative council said the protests are on pause for 24 hours on condition the university removes private security and lifts suspension of students.
