The last of the former Wood River Power Plant along the Berm Highway is coming down this weekend. The walkway and conveyor over the highway will be removed on Saturday, and the smokestacks will be imploded at 8am on Sunday. The highway will be closed in both directions from 9am Saturday until to 9am Sunday.
The closure will run from Enviro Way on the East end to Locks and Dam Way on the West end. East Alton Fire Chief Tim Quigley tells The Big Z if you want to watch, the closest you can get is an area located on Chessen Lane of East Broadway in Alton.

The three smoke stacks at the former Dynegy Energy coal-fired power plant are tentatively set to fall on Sunday. Explosive charges will drop the stacks onto the property which is undergoing mediation. Unhealthy build-up lining the inside of the stacks are a potential health hazard and people should avoid the path of the dust as much as possible. The stacks are next to Illinois 143 in East Alton. The highway will be closed before demolition and remain closed following Sunday’s action to let workers also remove a covered coal conveyor belt which crosses all four lanes of traffic. There has been a slight change of plans for the demolition work at the former Wood River Power Plant along the Berm Highway. Only the former main building will be knocked down Monday while the smokestacks will remain standing for a few more weeks. The highway will be closed in both directions from 7:45am to 8:15am on Monday near the plant.
Officials announced the change to the demolition plan late Saturday, saying the three smokestacks will now come down in late February or early March. Highway 143 will be closed next to the plant from Route 3 to the Belchick Expressway for 15 minutes before and 15 after the demolition which will only take a few seconds. The former Dynegy Plant closed in May 2016 and the property is being cleaned up and remediated by Liability Partners of St. Louis in the hopes of bringing a new development to the area. You can see video of the demolition on The Big Z Facebook page.
