Gov. Phil Murphy signed a law that he says protects the pay of New Jerseys temp workers, who have grown to 127,000 with the warehouse boom.

Gov. Phil Murphy on Feb. 6 signed into law the “Temporary Workers’ Bill of Rights,” which expands the protections afforded to these workers.

The bill requires companies to pay temporary workers minimum wage after deductions for food and meals, improving conditions for thousands of immigrants.

The state Senate passed the “Temp Worker Bill of Rights” after a monthslong saga that included a thrice-delayed final vote. The bill will give temp workers the right to basic information in their native language and eliminate agency fees.

The legislation would provide privacy rights to domestic workers, and require employers and domestic employees to enter into a written contract.

The bill would codify safeguards for temporary workers in New Jersey. “This is not about politics," said Diego Bartesaghi. “This is about workers and workers’ rights.”
