Researchers say an increase of more smart and connected vehicles on U.S. roads could lead to big changes for traffic signals. Several studies are currently exploring different technologies and methods to connect smarter vehicles with traffic light systems.

With GPS data from as little as 6% of vehicles on the road, University of Michigan researchers can recalibrate traffic signals to significantly reduce congestion and delays at intersections.
