A Saweni canegrower is pleading with Government to have provisions in the upcoming 2021-2022 National Budget for an increase to the 2021 forecast cane price of $54.36 per tonne.
Gangaiya, sardar for Gang 38 Saweni Sector, said the 30 farmers in his group would not make any money if the price remained the same.
“The harvesting cost is $30 per tonne of cane for my gang members,” he said.
“We will be left with virtually nothing in our pockets after all the deductions are made so it’s very important for Government to consider providing further subsidies for fertilisers.

Former prime minister and National Farmers Union general secretary Mahendra Chaudhry has called on the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) to inform stakeholders, including farmers, about crushing progress.
He said so far, the Labasa mill was believed to have crushed 15,000 tonnes of cane over the past three weeks which was 5000 tonnes per week.
“The average weekly crush so far at this mill is about 5000 tonnes which is well below the normal weekly rate of 25,000 to 30,000 tonnes per week,” Mr Chaudhry said.
