Astoria man dies while ice fishing

ASTORIA Feb. 10 the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office responded to the report of a missing person in rural Astoria. Henry J. Umphryes, 62, Vermont, was reported missing by friends who had located his vehicle at a property west of Astoria. Fishing items were located on the ice of a nearby pond on the property. The friends had last heard from Umphryes Feb. 1. Farmers of the property and friends of Umphryes worked to remove ice from the pond. Thanks to their efforts, the Mason County ESDA Dive team was able to put in a boat with sonar on the pond Feb. 12.

The Illinois Sheriffs’ Association announces that it will be awarding over $58,000.00 in college scholarships throughout the State of Illinois to students wishing to pursue higher education during the 2021-2022 academic year. The scholarships are to be applied to tuition, books and fees only. The student must be enrolled full-time at a certified institution of higher learning within the State of Illinois.
Sheriff Jeff Standard, Fulton County, will be awarding one scholarship in the amount of $500.
There will be no restriction on any applicant by reason of race, age, creed, color, sex or national origin.
