In the US, some Orthodox women in medicine still plagued by discrimination

Brooklyn native Rochel Leah Lehrer is a physician assistant (PA) in neurosurgery at Westchester Medical Center in New York. When at age 11 Lehrer lost her younger brother after he was hit by a car outside his school in Brooklyn, she knew she wanted to “make people feel better and try to heal everybody.” She has been working in the field for some 20 years. “I started PA school [at Touro College] when I was 20,” Lehrer said. “We were only two frum girls in my class.”

Why physician diversity matters, and how GME programs can boost it

Patients of color often seek care from doctors who look like them, but they may have to wait a long time for that opportunity. AMA Equity Plan 2021-2023 Embedding equity into medicine requires planning and honesty. To meet this moment, the AMA has developed a plan to advance racial and social justice. Medical schools need to aggressively recruit a more diverse community of medical students beginning as early as high school to help in the fight against health inequities, according to William McDade, MD, PhD. Dr. McDade is the chief diversity and inclusion officer at the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
