Tri-Service Reserve Force joins fight against COVID in Greater Manchester

Our Reserve Forces have been providing a valuable contribution to the various strands of assistance to civil authorities since early last year, but this is the first time a formed force of this size, comprised solely of Reservists has been generated for a bespoke task. Each element is integrated with a Regular Army unit headquarters already supporting delivery of community testing in Greater Manchester. A total of 82 Reserve personnel have been deployed, with the Army component of 29 soldiers drawn from 4th Battalion, The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment, (4 LANCS), The Queen’s Own Yeomanry and 8th Battalion, The Rifles. They will be integrated with C Coy, 1st Battalion The Rifles, which is already on task in Manchester, and will be supporting Oldham Council.

Grants for household energy efficiency improvements now available until September

Lightbulbs GRANTS for household energy efficiency improvements worth up to £10,000 will now be available until September. The Green Homes Grant Local Authority Delivery Scheme was launched in November 2020, offering grants for residents to put towards the cost of installing insulation, including external wall, loft and cavity wall insulation, and low carbon heating systems, for example an air source heat pump. In addition to these installations, households could be eligible for further measures including new doors and windows to replace single glazed windows and smart heating controls. To date, more than 500 households in Greater Manchester have been approved to receive improvements, with installations set to begin later this month.

Each year, UK households throw away 4.5 million tonnes of food that could have been eaten.

During the last session of the UK-Bangladesh Climate Partnership Forum virtual series, COP26 President Designate Alok Sharma explored how the UK and Bangladesh can work together to tackle climate change by highlighting three critical issues: getting finance flowing; improving the quality of that finance and increasing sums for adaptation; and making finance more accessible. He highlighted practical ways to address those issues and noted that the UK has itself committed £11.6bn for international climate finance (over the next 6 financial years) and is advocating for other donors to make commitments too.
