Himanta Biswa Sarma, the charioteer of BJP s stride in the Northeast, is now the brightest star in the political spectrum in the city of eastern lights. The 52-year-old leader is all set to swear in as the 15th Chief Minister of Assam on Monday.
Sarma was elected as the leader of the BJP legislative party in Assam on Sunday. He will replace Sarbananda Sonowal, who tendered his resignation as Assam Chief Minister to Governor Jagadish Mukhi on Sunday.

Himanta Biswa Sarma joined the BJP ahead of the 2014 assembly elections after over a decade in Congress. He held several key portfolios in the Sonowal-led outgoing government.

The announcement came after the newly-elected legislative members of the assembly ratified the decision during a meeting at the Library Auditorium in Guwahati today.
BJP leaders BL Santosh, Baijayant Jay Panda and Ajay Jamwal were also present at the Assam Legislative Assembly for the BJP Legislative Party meet where Himanta s claim over the top post was upheld by the MLAs.

Guwahati, May 9 : The BJP s lead strategist in northeastern states and senior leader Himanta Biswa Sarma, who had played significant role in forming saffron party led governments in three other northeastern states - Tripura, Manipur and Arunachal will take charge as the 15th Chief Minister of Assam on Monday.
Raj Bhavan officials said that Governor Jagdish Mukhi would administer the oath of office to the Chief Minister designate Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday noon at the famous Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati.

GUWAHATI: The opposition Congress and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) on Sunday conveyed their greetings to the chief minister-designate of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma and hoped that it will become one of the most developed states of the country under his tenure.
Ending seven days of speculations, Sarma on Sunday was unanimously elected as the leader of the BJP Legislature Party and the NDA Legislature Party, clearing the stage for him to become the chief minister of the only non-Congress government returning to power in the state for the second consecutive term.
