BJP had in 2016 lone muslim MLA Aminul Haque Laskar. He was Deputy Speaker in the state assembly. He lost from Sonai to Karim Uddin Barbhuiya of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF)in this assembly polls.

BJP had fielded eight Muslim candidates all of them lost. The party was expecting seven seats.
Following dismal performance of BJP in the Muslim minority dominated areas, the party has dismantled its committees in state, districts and booths.

GUWAHATI: It was not the BJP, but the minority-based All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) which had the best strike rate in the Assam elections.
The party contested 20 seats and won 16 with a strike rate of 80%. The seats were in Bengali-Muslim majority regions of Central and Lower Assam and the Barak Valley of Southern Assam where the party holds sway. In 2016, the AIUDF had contested 73 seats and won 13.
The BJP-Asom Gana Parishad (AGP)-United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) combine had won 75 of the state’s 126 seats as against 50 by the Congress-led grand alliance of 10 Opposition parties which had the AIUDF, the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), the Left and some smaller regional parties as components.

Guwahati, May 5 : Amidst continuing uncertainty over who would be the next Assam Chief Minister, a top leader of the ruling BJP on Wednesday said that the government formation process would take a couple of days as the central leadership, including party President J.P. Nadda are busy in dealing with the post-poll violence in West Bengal.
The senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader said that the central leadership including Nadda, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar and BJP s national Vice-President Baijayant Jay Panda are expected in Guwahati soon to decide the leader of the legislature party who will become the next Chief Minister.

The number of millionaire MLAs and those with criminal cases in 2016 was 72 and 14, respectively Assam elected more moneyed candidates and those with criminal cases in the recently concluded Assembly elections than in 2016.
Data analysed by Assam Election Watch (AEW) and Association for Democratic Reforms revealed 34 of the 126 candidates who won had declared criminal cases against them compared with 14 five years ago.
