While the beginning stages of motherhood are challenging for any new parent, Shannan Renk had multiple unusual obstacles to overcome throughout her pregnancy and first weeks as a mother. The 34-year-old nurse at Upstate University Hospital worked on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic while she was pregnant, assisting doctors in treating patients infected with the virus. Renk then left the hospital on maternity leave in the winter, right as the second spike of COVID-19 cases hit Onondaga County.

Syracuse, N.Y. Three vacant houses caught fire within two hours overnight on Syracuse’s South Side, including two homes on the same street.
One Syracuse firefighter was injured fighting the first of the three blazes, all of which happened at homes no more than half a mile apart.
The Syracuse Fire Department has battled six major fires at homes in the city since Saturday. Four of the houses were vacant.

The man was pronounced dead Wednesday afternoon at Upstate University Hospital, police said.
Police were called to Mexico Community Park in the village of Mexico around 5:15 a.m. Tuesday to speak with the man, who was believed suicidal and possibly armed, according to Oswego County 911 dispatchers.
The man was in his car in the park threatening to kill himself, said Trooper Jack Keller, a spokesman for the state police.
