As a teen I was a bit of a hypochondriac and developed a fascination with microbes. I went to medical school to learn about them. I fell in love with emergency medicine. I’ve been with Upstate since 2009.
29-year-old man shot in leg in Syracuse

Syracuse, N.Y. ― A 29-year-old man was shot Friday afternoon near East Brighton Street in Syracuse, according to Syracuse police.
Police were called at 1:59 p.m. to a report of shots being fired in the 100 block of Smith Lane, Syracuse police said in a news release. The shooting happened near Vincent Apartments, 105 Smith Lane.
A short time later, the man was dropped off at Upstate University Hospital, police said. He had been shot in the leg.
The man is expected to survive, police said.
Officers on Smith Lane found evidence of shots being fired and multiple casings were located.
Man stabbed in the butt during dispute in Syracuse; woman arrested

Syracuse, N.Y. A woman has been charged with stabbing a man in the butt during a fight Monday night in Syracuse.
Xiomara Rodriguez, 35, assaulted Joe Alvarez-Vega, 30, in the city’s Elmwood neighborhood, said Sgt. Matthew Malinowski, Syracuse Police Department spokesman. Rodriguez and Alvarez-Vega, both of Syracuse, had been arguing before the stabbing, he said.
The stabbing happened around 9:25 p.m. in the 100 block of Glenwood Avenue.
After he was stabbed in the butt, Alvarez-Vega called 911, according to police scanner dispatches. He was transported to Upstate University Hospital for treatment.

The man is expected to survive.
The stabbing happened at about 2:45 a.m. in the 200 block of Gertrude Street, police said.
Officers found the man with the stab wound to his back in the 600 block of Lodi Street, and he was taken to Upstate University Hospital, according to police.
The stabbing is still being investigated and police ask that anyone with information call 315-442-5222.

Syracuse, N.Y. A 26-year-old man was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon on Syracuse’s South Side, police said.
The shooting with injuries was reported just after 1:30 p.m. in the 1400 block of Midland Avenue, Syracuse police spokesman Sgt. Matthew Malinowski said.
The man was taken to Upstate University Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.
A neighbor who said she came outside of her house when she heard several gunshots said she saw a man stagger and fall to the ground. He appeared to be shot several times, the neighbor said.
