New Recommendations Aim to Guide Safe Exercise for People with Parkinson’s The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the Parkinson’s Foundation have released new exercise recommendations to provide safe and effective guidance on physical activity to people with Parkinson’s and to certified exercise professionals working with them. The exercise recommendations came from a Parkinson’s Foundation convening in March 2020 and build upon ACSM’s science-based standards for exercise testing and prescription. “As a leader in driving better health outcomes and quality of life for people with Parkinson’s, these exercise recommendations are an important framework to ensure the PD community is receiving safe and effective exercise programs and instruction.”

Do those 7-minute workouts and 7-day challenges really work?

Seven is the magic number that is currently rolling off the lips of fitness enthusiasts. Take a look at the amount of seven-minutes-a-day home workouts and seven-day challenges that are flooding the Internet and trending on YouTube. They make all kinds of claims, but is that duration really sufficient enough to make you lose fat and drop inches off your body parts? Or is it a scam? The whole seven-minute rage started in 2013 when the original high intensity interval training (HIIT) workout was published in the American College of Sport Medicine’s (ACSM) Health and Fitness Journal. The intention was to get people to move and maximise their health benefits in the shortest amount of time, i.e. alternating between 30-second bursts of maxed-out exercise (making you breathe hard) and brief, 10-second periods of rest.

E-Bikes Can Provide a Good Workout

E-Bikes Can Provide a Good Workout Pedal-assisted electric bikes provided a faster and more “fun” commute while raising breathing and heart rates enough to contribute to fitness. Credit.Scott McIntyre for The New York Times Does riding an electric bike to work count as exercise, and not just a mode of transportation? It can, if you ride right, according to a pragmatic new study comparing the physiological effects of e-bikes and standard road bicycles during a simulated commute. The study, which involved riders new to e-cycling, found that most could complete their commutes faster and with less effort on e-bikes than standard bicycles, while elevating their breathing and heart rates enough to get a meaningful workout.
