Texas Tech is the home to many women in the STEM field, but the road has not always been easy for past and present women pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
âThe math community that I entered is not the community that my mentors entered, and itâs not going to be the community that my protegees enter,â Raegan Higgins, an associate professor of mathematics and statistics at Tech who has both a masterâs degree and a PhD in mathematics, said.
Both the STEM educational and professional environments have been dominated by men for decades, but not without a few female role models along the way. Higgins said that while a majority of her teachers growing up were male, she was inspired by her eighth grade math teacher- the woman who inspired her to go into teaching herself.

Russell was born on Oct. 2, 1924 and is the daughter of the late Grace (Forman) and Frank Manspeaker.
âMy best memories of her are about her spirit,â said Rogish. âHer âcan doâ unassuming nature. Her knowing that she could do anything she tried, and she did this at a time when it was harder for women to have opportunities in the world of science.â

Editor s Note: The following message was sent to USI students and employees on Wednesday, January 27.
USI Community,
It is my sincere regret to inform you that Betty J. Fordice Rice, founding First Lady of the University, died peacefully on Tuesday, January 26 at her residence in York, Pennsylvania, at the age of 90.
Mrs. Rice and I spoke just last week. She was gracious and extremely kind, as I found her to be every time I had the pleasure of interacting with her. Dr. and Mrs. Rice were the founding first couple of this great University and set the bar in their service to our community.
