Amazon Game Studios has cancelled an upcoming Lord of the Rings title over a contractual dispute between itself and Tencent.
Following that deal, Amazon and Tencent were reportedly unable to resolve an issue caused by contract negotiations, resulting in the project being scrapped.
Although the specifics of the dispute are unclear, an Amazon spokesperson told Bloomberg it was unable to secure terms to proceed with this title at this time. We love the Lord of the Rings IP, and are disappointed that we won’t be bringing this game to customers, added the company. The development team responsible for the Lord of the Rings title has now been moved on to other projects.

The resulting contract negotiations led to a dispute between Amazon and Tencent that eventually caused the game’s cancellation, Bloomberg reported earlier on Saturday, citing people familiar with the matter.

Amazon Games Studios’ The Lord of the Rings MMO has been cancelled due to contract disputes between Amazon and Tencent.
Back in 2019, Amazon Game Studios announced a partnership with China-based Leyou Technologies. The partnership would see both parties team up to develop a brand new MMO based on The Lord of the Rings. Unfortunately, nearly two years later, the game has been cancelled.
As reported by Bloomberg, Tencent’s purchase of Leyou back in December was the breaking point. Contractual negotiations between Amazon and Tencent ultimately led to the cancellation. Amazon confirmed the cancellation and are not proceeding with the title at this time.
