Legal practitioner advocates child adoption - Punch Newspapers

Punch Newspapers Sections Published 25 May 2021 Mrs Elizabeth Odoh, a legal practitioner, has called on Nigerians to be more open to child adoption even when they are blessed with their biological children. Odoh made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Abuja. She advised Nigerians to go for child adoption through legal processes. ”Nigerians should note that the only legal way to adopt in Nigeria is to work with the respective state social welfare office (usually named the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development). ”Adopt the child and make it your own. All the formalities must be done and when you adopt that child, treat them the way you will treat your own children,” she said.

Child Labor in Paraguay: How to Eradicate Criadazgo

TACOMA, Washington The abominable practice of criadazgo (roughly translated to serfdom in the context of child labor) is the practice of taking in a child from a less privileged family to work at a household without receiving any pay or education. In other words, it is a form of slavery that affects youths ranging from ages five to seventeen. Not only does it deprive them of their right to education, but minors often work long hours and experience sexual and physical abuse. Criadazgo in Paraguay Like in many other Latin American countries, criadazgo has existed in Paraguay practically since the country gained independence from Spain more than 200 years ago. Over the centuries, it has consolidated itself into Paraguayan society and was only declared illegal in 2001.
