UNIBENYouths of the Nesan-Kugbe Cultural Group from host communities of the Ambrose Alli University (AAU), yesterday, staged a peaceful protest in Ekpoma, Esan West Council to demand the appointment of an Esan indigene as vice-chancellor of the institution.
They rejected the appointment of a lecturer from the University of Benin (UNIBEN) and Bini indigene, Prof. Benson Osadolor, as acting vice-chancellor and demanded his immediate removal. x
The youths, who carried placards with various inscriptions, marched through major roads, visiting the Market Square, the Ekpoma Police Station and Palace of the Onogie of Ekpoma, HRH Anthony Abumere ll.
They also sought abrogation of the amended AAU Law, saying it was against the spirit of university autonomy, just as they appealed to Governor Godwin Obaseki to complete the Ihumudumu-Ujemen-Iruekpen road.

You’ve risen to the pinnacle of your career as an academic. Did you always know you would come this far?
No; far from it. I grew up in a rural community called Afowa. My father was a carpenter and my mother was a farmer who did little trading by the side, so it was tough growing up. Going to school was even tougher but I was lucky to be enrolled in school. After I had got through primary school almost without any stress, getting into secondary school became difficult. The Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is set for a showdown with the Edo state government as it has called for a reversal of the law recently passed by the Edo State House of Assembly that has ceded the administration of the school to the Visitor who is Governor Godwin Obaseki.
A statement yesterday by the Chairman and Secretary of the ASUU, Dr Monday Igbafen, and Anthony Aizebioje Coker said the Union was unconvinced by the reason given by the State government for the “unconventional and hasty amendment of the University Law, an amendment which confers on the Governor with extra-ordinary powers to “invade” the University with total disregard for the devastating consequences on University autonomy, long-tested traditions, ethos and organs of the University.”
