Learn to make a restaurant-quality meal virtually and support RVH

BARRIE, ONT. A virtual cooking class and fundraiser, called Cooking Up Hope, hosted by Georgian College in Barrie, will support Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre patient care and health-care workers during the pandemic. Local chef Amanda Rider from Dunlop Street Diner will teach the interactive online class. Participants will learn how to create a three-course meal from the comfort of their own home and be able to ask Rider questions on preparing a restaurant-quality meal at home. This is the first time the Event Management Program students have hosted a fundraiser like this. They hope to raise as much as they can through the $30 tickets. Aprons and buttons are also available for sale to benefit RVH.

BARRIE, ONT. The past year living in a pandemic has been especially challenging for health-care and frontline workers. This has been a gruelling, scary year during which our staff and physicians worried for their own safety and that of their families, says Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) President and CEO Janice Skot. The Barrie hospital s president recalls one year ago when the World Health Organization declared a global pandemic. In those early days, directives and guidelines changed constantly as the world learned more about the novel coronavirus. It was uncharted territory, and hospitals had to shift direction on a dime. The uncertainty was overwhelming as we tried to imagine the pandemic s path, Skot says.

COVID-19 News: Visitor restrictions easing at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre

BARRIE, ONT. Visitor restrictions are easing at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre. The Barrie hospital announced it would allow one visitor per patient back into the building once a week for one hour. In a statement Thursday, the hospital s president and CEO Janice Skot said strict measures would remain in place until it was safe to allow more visitors inside. We recognize the important role a loved one plays in a patient s recovery, she added. The phased visitation plan requires visitors to schedule times in advance by calling the inpatient unit on the day of the planned visit. Hospital staff will screen visitors for COVID-19 symptoms, and all visitors must wear a hospital-provided face mask.

In the days and weeks that followed, shaking hands became a thing of the past, while wearing face masks, using hand sanitizer and isolating became the new normal. March 11, 2020, also marked the first virus-related death in Simcoe County after an elderly patient died from complications related to COVID-19 at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) in Barrie. It was also the first COVID-related death in Ontario. That tragic milestone shaped RVH s aggressive response to the pandemic, said RVH president and CEO Janice Skot as she reflected on those early days. The uncertainty was overwhelming as we tried to imagine the pandemic s path.
