New plant can generate 600 litres of oxygen per minute
The first of the four oxygen generator plants allotted to Kerala by the Union government has started functioning at the Government Medical College Hospital, Kalamassery.
The plant, which operates on PSA (pressure swing absorption) technology, will run-round-the clock and can generate 600 litres of oxygen per minute. Of these four plants that are being set up in the State, the unit set up here at a cost of around Rs1.5 crore is the smallest.
The new plant will supply oxygen to 250 beds in eight wards where Covid patients are under treatment. The plant draws air, compresses it, and provides oxygen of 95 per cent concentration via pipelines.

Appealing to the people above 45 years to voluntarily get inoculated and help fight the covid-19 virus effectively, District Monitoring Officer and senior IAS officer Kumar V Jayanth said that the oxygen requirement for covid-19 patients in the hospitals here was sufficient, on Friday.
The officer, who was here to take stock of the ground situation on COVID19, held discussions with Collector K Senthil Raj, SP V Jeyakumar and other officers from the Health and Municipal departments. He also inspected the Government Medical College Hospital and understood about the availability of the Oxygen and among others during an interaction with the Dean and doctors.

While oxygen demand and supply in the district are being closely monitored, efforts are on to increase the number of beds with oxygen supply and strengthen a decentralised system at the local body level to handle emergencies.
The current daily demand for oxygen in the district is 15 to 20 metric tonnes, according to District Collector S. Suhas. There are five oxygen tankers in the district. Medical oxygen is being supplied to the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH), PVS Hospital, and the CIAL COVID care centre, while smaller hospitals require around 30 to 40 oxygen cylinders.
