Ernakulam district recorded 771 new COVID-19 cases and 713 recoveries on Thursday.
In Thrikkakara, 35 people tested positive, while 22 cases were reported from Mazhuvannoor, 21 from Kavalangad, and 20 each from Thripunithura and Vengoor. Twelve health workers also tested positive. A total of 11,078 people are being treated for the disease in the district.
PVS Hospital would soon be able to accommodate 100 patients in order to handle the surge that the district has been witnessing, said Dr. Mathews Numpeli, district programme manager, National Health Mission. The Government Medical College would retain around 40 ICU beds for critically ill COVID patients even when it resumes non-COVID inpatient services, he said. The District Hospital at Aluva would begin functioning as a COVID care facility by the end of the month.

An airplane in India declared a mid-air emergency after a 7-year-old girl suffered a heart attack and passed away.
Ayushi Punvasi Prajapati, who is from Siddharth Nagar, Chaffa, which is located in UP, was travelling with her father when the incident happened.
It was reported that 7-year-old girl was onboard the GoAir flight G8307 when she suffered the heart attack.
The plane had to land at the Nagpur Airport on January 19, 2021, so the girl could get emergency treatment by the staff of the Kingsway Hospital.
She was referred to the Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH), however, she was declared dead upon arrival.

Couple allegedly denied food, water for days at son’s house
An 80-year-old man died after allegedly being neglected by his son at Asambani near Mundakayam in Kerala. The deceased was identified as Podiyan.
Podiyan and his wife Ammini were found by ASHA workers and palliative care team members on Tuesday in a poor condition, without food, water and medicine for days, at the house of his younger son.
Although the couple was shifted to the General Hospital, Kanjirapally, with the help of the police and people’s representatives, Podiyan died later in the day. Ammini, who is showing signs of mental health issues, was admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital, Kottayam.

While the need for organ transplantation remains high, donations, particularly cadaver donations are few, leaving patients waiting for years.
Hari, a patient in Thrissur, has been awaiting a liver transplant for four years, said his wife. He was diagnosed with liver issues in 2006. Four years ago, they were informed that he would need a transplant, but have been unable to find a donor, leaving them with financial problems stemming from the illness, she said. She was speaking at an online awareness session organised by the Institute of Medicine and Law.
