The active COVID-19 caseload in Kozhikode jumped to 6,487 cases on Saturday when 722 more people tested positive for SARS-CoV-2.
According to the District Medical Officer, there were 710 locally acquired infections and five others with an unknown source. As many as 6,691 samples were tested and the daily test positivity rate is 10.79%.
A total of 158 cases of local transmission were reported from the Kozhikode Corporation areas, 36 from Kunnamangalam, 31 from Maniyoor, 27 from Chorod, and 25 from Nochad. Five persons had returned from abroad and two from other States. There were 561 recoveries. Three deaths were reported from the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, on Saturday.

The stage is set for commencement of COVID-19 vaccination at nine centres across Virudhunagar district on Saturday.
The district has got 9,720 dosages of Covishield vaccine. Virudhunagar Collector R. Kannan, who would inspect the vaccination programme that begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, said that vaccination is purely voluntary.
“As of now, only volunteers among the healthcare workers would be given the shots,” he said.
Stating that those who have comorbidities and who are above 50 years of age would not be given the vaccination in the first phase.
Joint Director, Health Services, R. Manoharan, said that the vaccines have been stocked in two places – one in Virudhunagar and other in Sivakasi.

The first phase of vaccination will cover healthcare workers to be vaccinated in the six designated centres here on Saturday.
Dharmapuri Government Medical College Hospital, District Headquarters Hospital in Pennagaram, Palacodde and Harur, and two upgraded primary health centres in Morappur and Karimangalam are the designated vaccination centres here.
In the first phase, 11,800 vaccines have been brought in carriers and stored in refrigerators in the centres.
Frontline workers, primarily the healthcare system staff working in primary health centres, government hospitals, medical college hospital, paramedicals, and private healthcare workers, including ICDS and sanitation workers, are being covered in the vaccination programme.

Active cases drop below 2,000 in Chennai; Ariyalur reports no fresh case; Number of active cases stands at 6,299
One district Ariyalur had no fresh case of COVID-19 and 18 districts recorded fewer than 10 cases on Friday, as Tamil Nadu reported a total of 621 fresh infections.
Chennai continued to report less than 200 cases as 180 persons tested positive. In fact, the city’s active cases fell below 2,000. At present, 1,971 persons are undergoing treatment, while 215 were discharged after treatment.
There were 67 cases in Coimbatore, while the remaining districts had less than 30 cases each. These included Chengalpattu 25, Salem 24, Thanjavur 27, Tiruvallur 22, and Tiruppur 27.
