By Washington Technology staff Mar 16, 2021 George Mason University’s research and education center focused on government contracting has added 13 new members to its advisory board along with 13 additions to the affiliated faculty roster. The Center for Government Contracting made the board appointments to bring in a full range of industry leaders from GovCon companies of all sizes that work with federal agencies or support other contractors, GMU said March 10. One of those new board appointments comes directly form the Defense Department in John Tenaglia, principal director of defense contracting and pricing in the office of DOD’s undersecretary for acquisition and sustainment.

SAIC appoints YouTube exec to board Science Applications International Corp. has appointed Garth Graham to its board of directors. Graham is the global head of health care for YouTube. With this appointment, SAIC’s board grows from nine members to 10. Graham will become a member of the board’s human resources and compensation committee, SAIC said Tuesday. Graham joined YouTube in January and before that was the chief community health officer for CVS Health Corp. He also has been president of the Aetna Foundation and vice president for community health. The appointment of Graham is a sign of how seriously SAIC is looking at health care as an area to expand into. In a recent interview for the Washington Technology Project 38 podcast, SAIC executive Bob Genter said health care is an area where the company is underserving the market.

The 109 transactions that closed last year are down from the 119 that closed in 2019, but still significantly higher than the 80 completed in 2018. We’ve witnessed an extraordinary pace of acquisitions in the past two full years and in looking at the deals so far this year, it seems that the extraordinary might just become the ordinary. As we look at these deals, we see common themes. Companies continue to buy companies for access to customers and contracts, the need to add critical capabilities to build portfolios, and scale still counts, but often as a strategic play.
