Three Homer 33C teachers have earned their National Board Teacher Certification (NBT) from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS).

Shannon Schroeder teaches 8th grade English Language Arts (ELA) at Homer Jr. High. She holds a bachelor s degree in Secondary Education and Composition from DePauw University and a master s degree in Secondary Education and English from Indiana University. She recently finished a second master s from Olivet Nazarene University in Curriculum and Instruction & School Leadership. Mrs. Schroeder co-sponsors the Natural Helpers club, serves on the School Leadership Team, and is a District Instructional Technology Coach.

CYPRESS, CA The race is on at Los Alamitos Race Course. This week, the California Horse Racing Board decided some action would be taken against a trainer and veterinarian at the track.
State regulators, in a reversal of a decision made last month, Thursday extended an operating license by six months for quarter horse racing at Los Alamitos Race Course, where two horses died last weekend while training at the Cypress track.
According to the board s website, Don t Stop Looking, a 3-year-old filly, and Noor Khan, a 4-year-old mare, died in training related fatalities.

HAINES CITY A 37-year-old Winter Haven man faces armed sexual battery charges for raping a man at knifepoint in a Haines City motel room, according to a Polk County Sheriff s Office news release.
Thomas Lee Simmons met a man on a dating website and the two arranged to meet Tuesday at Stay Plus Inn, 33224 U.S. Highway 27, investigators said.
According to the affidavit, the victim told detectives, The suspect came into the room, he pulled out a fixed blade knife with a brown handle from a sheath attached to his belt and told the victim to strip naked and lay on the bed. The suspect told the victim that he was with the narcotics unit, and he had other officers outside the room. During the encounter the suspect also pretended to talk on a radio to other individuals.
