Looking back at Strawberry Day

Did you know strawberries are the only fruit with their seeds on the outside of their skin? Did you know strawberries are in high in Vitamin C and can be a delicious way to meet your dietary goals of getting plenty of servings of fresh fruits and vegetables? Did you know strawberries are grown in every single state and that we have a large commercial strawberry operation in Etowah County, Norris Farms?  Our team from the Etowah County Extension Office   including Ashley Lawrence, Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program educator; Eric Schavey, Commercial Horticulture Regional Extension Agent; and Karen Howle-Hurst, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education Educator  were excited to share all this information and more during Strawberry Day last week at the 5th Street Market.

Brad Haire With carbon credit sales, major brokerage companies are focusing efforts on tracts of land in the Midwest. However, there are still companies striking deals with Alabama farmers. In addition to marketing cash crops, producers may have an opportunity to sell carbon stored in the soil on their operation. There is a lot of truth to the idea that farmers are the ultimate stewards of the land. The soil is their most valuable resource; farmers take great care to keep it fertile and productive. As this new market emerges, Alabama Cooperative Extension System agents and specialists are working to determine what it means for Alabama producers.

Pick up tips at Master Gardeners tour May 15-16

With spring in full swing, many residents are busy tending their yards and gardens to enhance their outdoor experience over the coming months. They will be able to pick up some expert tips next weekend when Lee County Master Gardeners of Alabama (LCMGA) hosts its “Spring Stroll” 2021 Garden Tour on May 15 and 16.  The tour will feature a variety of 10 private gardens in Auburn and Opelika, as well as a free bonus tour of the Auburn University President’s Mansion, with the goal of the tour being to educate the public and raise funds for projects.   The proceeds from the tour, which costs $30 a ticket, helps maintain four demonstration gardens in the area, including the butterfly garden at the Kreher Preserve; funds a $1,000 scholarship given every year to an Auburn University horticulture student; provide for a donation to the nonprofit Alabama 4-H, which, like the Master Gardeners, operates under the Alabama Cooperative Extension System; and helps fund other gr

Kelli Shomaker, Auburn’s vice president for business and finance and chief financial officer, said the fall 2021 tuition freeze was recommended as many parents and students are facing ongoing financial hardships from the COVID-19 pandemic, and the university received a significant increase in state appropriations for fiscal year 2022.
