International Education Week dedicated to student resiliency | WSU Insider

April 6, 2021 By Deb Strohmaier, International Programs More than 55 international flags were recently raised in the eerily empty Compton Union Building to honor and acknowledge Washington State University’s international community. International students, scholars and their families on and off campus persevered during a year marked by a flurry of punitive U.S. immigration policies, the inability to travel internationally and the need to distance from others. To honor the international community, which is currently spread around the world, members of WSU’s International Students’ Council are hosting a virtual International Education Week April 5 through 9 and have dedicated it to WSU’s students everywhere.

With a nudge from her professors, she enrolled in the University of Maine’s Electrical Engineering Technology (EET) program.  “I heard all good things about UMaine back when I was attending EMCC,” says Nguyen, who will graduate with a bachelor’s degree from UMaine in May. “All my advisers and instructors recommended I continue my studies at UMaine. I took their suggestion and am so glad that I did. This was one of the best decisions of my life.”

The next best thing to being there | WSU Insider | Washington State University

March 11, 2021 By Deb Strohmaier, International Programs When Kelly Newlon joined WSU’s Office of International Programs as director of Global Learning in December 2019, no one could foresee her scramble less than three months later to direct 300 students studying abroad to return home immediately from multiple countries. Nor could anyone predict international travel – and global learning – would be shut down for more than a year. Determined not to be “dream crushers,” Newlon and the Global Learning team worked together virtually for months to bring the world to students stuck at home. “We wanted to create a program where our grounded students could learn and thrive without being able to travel.”
