The government is to launch the new environmental watchdog for England on an interim basis ahead of its formal establishment as part of the Environment Bill.
Under the latest plans set out, the new Interim Office for Environmental Protection will be set up from July in non-statutory form to provide independent oversight of the government’s environmental progress and to accelerate the foundation of the full body.

The UK’s new environmental watchdog will begin work on an interim basis in June, after delays to the environment bill mean it cannot be established as a statutory body until the autumn.
The Interim Office for Environmental Protection will provide independent oversight of the government’s environmental progress and “accelerate the foundation of the full body”, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said.
It will be led by its chair, Dame Glenys Stacey, and interim chief executive, Natalie Prosser, whose appointment was announced last month. The regulator’s other non-executive directors, who will become the OEP’s board when it becomes an independent legal entity, will be appointed in the coming weeks.
A new body, the Interim Environmental Governance Secretariat (IEGS), has been established on a temporary basis now that the European Commission no longer has an environmental oversight role.
Its key role in Northern Ireland will be the management of complaints.
It will operate until later in the year when the proposed Office for Environmental Protection (OEP) is expected to be established.
“Our environment is valuable in its own right but it also sustains economic growth and facilitates social wellbeing, so its protection and enhancement are top priorities for me,” said Minister Lyons.
“As we await the introduction of the OEP, this new system means everyone can be reassured that environmental oversight will not simply be ignored
Report: Strong net-zero policy could help UK attract £350bn of investment by 2050
The low-carbon energy transition in the UK could lead to the development of £350bn of investible assets by 2050 - but only if businesses and policymakers do more to support key sectors.
Through 2030, investment opportunities will grow in sectors like wind and solar generation, the report states. Pictured: The Walney Extension offshore wind farm
That is according to a new report from Lane Clark & Peacock’s Energy Analytics Arm, published today (2 March).
The report charts the ways in which existing renewable technology sectors, including wind and solar electricity generation and battery energy storage, will need to scale up if the UK is to meet its net-zero target. Trajectories for technologies that are still maturing, like green hydrogen and carbon capture, are also considered.
