BIMCO: Shipbuilding orders jump by 119.7% YoY amid record containership demand May 28, 2021, by Jasmina Ovcina Total shipbuilding orders in the first five months of this year have increased by 119.7% compared with the same period in 2020, BIMCO’s data shows. The massive rebound in ordering has been driven by record high containership contracting, as investors in this segment find themselves flush with cash. So far 43.6 million DWT of orders have been placed at shipyards, towering above the 19.8 million DWT at the start of 2020, when order levels were lower due to uncertainty at the start of the pandemic.
