ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - As Albemarle County Public Schools (ACPS) gear up to enter Phase 4, school nurses are getting prepared too. Theyâre navigating a landscape thatâs gone from bumps, bruises and daily medication to COVID-19 isolation rooms and daily health screenings.
Nearly a year into virtual, and more recently hybrid, learning, school nurses in the county have gone from seeing 40 to 50 students a day to one or two. Itâs all part of a major role shift that has seen nurses go from on-site medical care to key coronavirus watchdogs.

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - New data is showing just how much learning loss is affecting the youngest students in Albemarle County Public Schools (ACPS). In a key literacy assessment, students below the benchmark increased by more than 10%.
Participation in benchmarks is down across the board in ACPS, but the data shows that while older students have been less impacted, elementary school students are increasingly falling behind.

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) -Albemarle County Public Schools (ACPS) is moving to stage 4 in just a few weeks, which means more students will be taking the bus to school once again.
Stage 4 means prekindergarten-to-3rd graders will be in school four days a week, while older students will be in classrooms for two days. Although down a total of 17 school bus drivers, the county says it is prepared to get your kids to school safely.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Albemarle County Public Schools are getting ready to welcome many students back to the classroom.
It’s been a while for many students, some of whom have not had an in-person learning day since March 2020, but a 6-1 vote by the school board makes it official: the county is moving to Stage 4 on March 15.
“We have a directive from the Governor of Virginia to make face-to-face instruction our primary objective, and that’s what we’re doing,” said Superintendent Matt Haas, who recommended the move last week.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Physicians with the University of Virginia Health System say they are not expecting a spike in cases as students of all ages return to the classroom.
UVA Health Director of Hospital Epidemiology Doctor Costi Sifri says national research suggests returning students to a K-12 classroom setting with proper health and safety measures - such as mask-wearing, social distancing and temperature checks - does not pose a significant risk, especially as teachers get vaccinated for the coronavirus.
