State health officials reported 23 new covid-related deaths in Monday’s report, bringing the state total since the pandemic began to 26,276.
Of the latest deaths reported, 21 were from April, one was from March and one from December. The new numbers increase April’s total to 975 covid-19 deaths. It was the state’s seventh deadliest month of the pandemic.
In Allegheny County, officials reported no new deaths in the two-day period, leaving the county’s total to date at 1,867 deaths.
There was one new death reported in Westmoreland County in the past two days, bringing the county’s total to 746, with 10 deaths in the past week.

PITTSBURGH (AP) Light of Life Rescue Mission had a vaccine clinic planned to help vaccinate homeless people earlier this month. The shelter, which operates short- and long-term programs for the homeless, as well as addiction recovery and employment assistance, planned to administer the single-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Then, about three hours before the April 13 event was supposed to start, news broke that use of the vaccine had been paused.
The shelter quickly shifted gears and administered the Moderna vaccine instead, said Jerrel Gilliam, executive director. But the development altered Light of Life’s vaccine strategy, as clinicians had to inform patients, many of whom were had no housing, that they needed to return for a second dose.

Philadelphia had the most cases newly reported Saturday with 382, followed by Allegheny (271), Bucks (171), Montgomery (165) and York (159).

The Pennsylvania Department of Health added 35 deaths to bring the state’s total to 26,253.
Of the 35 deaths newly reported Saturday, 34 are from April and one is from December. It’s the fifth straight day the state has added a death in December.
There were 954 covid-19 deaths in April, making it the seventh deadliest month, surpassing March (937).
The Allegheny County Health Department reported no new deaths to leave its total at 1,867. The state health department, meanwhile, reported two deaths in Allegheny County to bring its total to 1,899. The discrepancy in reporting between the two health departments has yet to be fully explained.
