A bat with rabies bit one child and might have been handled by several others in Pitcairn earlier this week, prompting a warning from the Allegheny County Health Department. The bat was captured Monday near Second Street at Center Avenue. A resident brought it to the health department for testing, spokesman Chris Togneri said. Before that, however, the bat bit one child and was passed around and handled by several others. The department determined the bat was positive for rabies on Wednesday. The bitten child was taken to the hospital for rabies treatment, which involves a number of shots that must be given before symptoms appear.

(AP) A rabid bat bit one child, and health officials on Thursday urged the parents of three other children who might have handled the bat to seek medical attention for them. The animal was captured on Monday in Pitcairn, about 15 miles (24 kilometers) east of Pittsburgh, and a resident brought it to the Allegheny County Health Department for testing the following day. The bat tested positive for rabies, according to county health officials. At least one child was bitten by the bat, and was taken to a hospital for treatment. The Health Department said its investigation revealed that several children might have passed the bat around, or been bitten by it. Health officials contacted the parents of three children and said that any other parents who believe their child encountered the bat should call the Health Department immediately.
