He leaves behind the Queen as well as his four children, Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward. His death means the title Duke of Edinburgh is now vacant. It is thought the title will be passed onto Prince Edward - as he is the only son who doesn t yet have a duke or duchess title.

THE Bishop of Winchester has paid tribute to Prince Philip following his death at the age of 99. The Right Reverend Dr Tim Dakin said: “Today we have lost a great statesman and a beloved member of our Royal Family. The Duke of Edinburgh will be remembered for his loyalty to his Queen and country. “As the senior Royal Knight of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, Prince Philip led others in exemplifying everything the Garter stood for in terms of outstanding service to the nation. This is a great loss for the country, for the whole Commonwealth, and above all for Her Majesty and the Royal Family; my thoughts and prayers are with them all.”
Born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark on June 10, 1921, on the Greek island of Corfu, he was the son of Princess Alice of Battenberg and Prince Andrew of Greece. After his family was exiled from Greece, Philip grew up in France and Germany.He was later sent to live in Britain with his maternal grandmother, Victoria Mountbatten, herself the granddaughter of Queen Victoria. In 1939, aged 18, Philip joined the British navy. He met his future wife, Elizabeth – his third cousin – that same year when the royal family toured his naval college. She was 13 at the time and reportedly fell in love with him almost immediately.

LONDON – Buckingham Palace officials say Prince Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth II, has died. He was 99.
“It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh,” the palace said. “His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.”
Philip spent a month in hospital earlier this year before being released on March 16 to return to Windsor Castle.
Philip, also known as the Duke of Edinburgh, married Elizabeth in 1947 and was the longest-serving consort in British history. He retired from public engagements in 2017 after carrying out more than 20,000 of them.
