For nearly 74 years, The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh were happily married, but their love began several years before their 1947 wedding at Westminster Abbey.
Their story began in 1939 when Princess Elizabeth was 13, and Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark was 18. Elizabeth had joined her parents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, and younger sister Princess Margaret on a trip to the royal naval college, Dartmouth, and teenage Elizabeth was smitten by the handsome royal cadet.
Prince Philip went off to fight in World War Two, and he and Elizabeth exchanged letters. Her cousin, Margaret Rhodes, later said: “Elizabeth was truly in love from the very beginning.”

THE IRISH NATIONAL flag at State buildings will be flown at half-mast as a “mark of respect” for Prince Philip, whose funeral takes place later today.
The Duke of Edinburgh died last week aged 99. His funeral begins at 3pm in St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.
His coffin will be transported from the castle to the chapel in a specially modified Land Rover he helped to design, and followed by Prince Charles and senior royals on foot, a senior Palace official said.
Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex
Possibly the most notable royal family member missing the funeral is Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex. Markle is currently pregnant with her second child, a girl, and on account of the same was advised not to take the transatlantic flight. She along with her one-year-old son Archie will not be attending the funeral. Her husband, Prince Harry, who is noted to have shared a close relationship with his late grandfather, will be in attendance.
Prince Harry is said to be isolating at Frogmore Cottage along with his cousin Princess Eugenie, having taken the long journey to be a part of the funeral.
The royal family has never appeared “quite so emotional” as during the funeral of the Duke of Edinburgh, an expert has said.
Judi James, author and body language expert, said the royals appeared “surprised at how hard Philip’s death had hit them” during the service on Saturday afternoon.

The monarch, who turns 95 next week, looked “very vulnerable and frail” as she arrived for the service, but remained “the most animated royal”, Ms James said.
“When she was sitting in her seat at the chapel she was wearing a hat that covered her face mostly.
