Noem vs. Lil Nas X
Apr 15, 2021 |
S. Dakota governor worries about souls, but doesn’t mind sacrificing lives
To create the right kind of atmosphere in which to write this column, I have all the lights off and am using a black background instead of a white one on my computer. I’m also burning a candle and listening to heavy metal.
Mind you, I have the lights off because it’s 2 p.m. And I’m burning the candle because I made vegan mac and cheese for lunch and my wife hates the smell. (The candle is called “Holiday Sparkle” and supposedly smells like “Bright Sparkling Water, Sugared Citrus, Wintertime Jasmine and Creamy Sandalwood,” but it really just smells like someone accidentally knocked into a perfume counter at Macy’s and a random collection of bottles smashed onto the floor.) Also, heavy metal is legit my favorite kind of music, so I’d be listening to it regardless.

On March 26, the 22-year-old American artist, Lil Nas X, released his new single “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” accompanied by a music video. The video features Christian imagery while the singer flirts with the devil in the Garden of Eden. It ends with Lil Nas X killing Satan and taking his crown after having given him an erotic lap dance. On March 29, just days after the video’s release, Lil Nas X also revealed a pair of doctored Nike Air Max 97s, “Satan Shoes,” on which he collaborated with MSCHF, a small company situated in Brooklyn. As expected, there have been a storm of negative reviews and comments on various media platforms, the most notable being on Twitter.
 Literalists stay mad
Lil Nas X released his new single, âMontero (Call Me By Your Name),â on March 26 along with its music video. Itâs already shot up to nearly 60 million views on YouTube and has sparked controversy with its erotic imagery â most uniquely, his descent to hell while pole dancing and his subsequent lapdance for the devil.Â
Furthering the backlash, Lil Nas X collaborated with a creative agency called MSCHF to create the âSatan shoe.â These 666 pairs of exclusive shoes were an obvious publicity stunt: the air bubble in the sole was advertised to have a drop of human blood, the design featured a pentagram, and embroidered on the shoe is âLuke 10:18,â a bible verse about the fall of Satan from heaven.
