Local schools see rising COVID cases amid recent surge
Amid the surge in COVID-19 cases in Michigan, local schools have seen a rise in active COVID-19 cases throughout recent weeks, leading up to spring break this week.
Case rates in the state have risen to the point of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer urging but not ordering Michigan school districts to shift to remote learning in high schools for the two weeks following spring break.
Districts began announcing plans to adhere to the recommendation Friday afternoon. Holland and Grand Haven schools had announced a shift to remote learning at the recommendation of the Ottawa County Department of Public Health as of 3:30 p.m. Friday.

HOLLAND, Mich. â Holland high school students will switch to remote learning through Thursday, April 22, according to Holland Public Schools.
Weâre told school officials ruled in favor of the decision after the Ottawa County Department of Public Health recommended a 14-day pause on youth sports and in-person instruction at county high schools.
HPS says there will be no school on the following day, Friday, April 23, due to PSD, adding that the two-week period may be shortened or extended in line with recommendations from health officials.

HOLLAND Local transit authorities in and around the greater-Holland area are offering free bus rides to COVID-19 vaccination appointments in an effort to broaden access to the vaccine.
The Macatawa Area Express (MAX) and Allegan County Transportation are offering free rides for residents to vaccination appointments. Health officials view the vaccines as one of the most important tools to mitigate COVID-19 and end the coronavirus pandemic.
MAX, which serves the city of Holland and surrounding areas, is offering same-day rides, but is encouraging riders to schedule their trip upon scheduling their vaccination appointment. To schedule a trip, call MAX at 616-355-1010.
