As an ordained minister in the Church of Uganda (a local church within the Anglican tradition), and especially as someone who spent two decades ministering through the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students, I am often deeply troubled by what I see and experience of churches in Uganda, Africa, and beyond. When I reflect on the testimony of Scripture about Jesus’ vision for the community that bears his name and consider the lived reality of churches, both locally and globally, I can’t help but notice a worrisome dissonance.
The convictions we hold about the nature and purpose of the church inform how we engage with the Bible. They shape our understanding of what it teaches about God, the gospel of Christ, and its imperatives for living out our faith in the world.
In honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary on December 8
th, the feast of the Immaculate Conception, an Italian priest based in Ireland named Fr. Giacomo Ballini led a procession through Dublin city centre where he performed prayers of exorcism over the Dáil (Parliament) and Taoiseach’s (Prime Minister) Office. In an act of public religious devotion rarely seen in Ireland for many years, hundreds gathered before the Irish Government Buildings to join Fr. Ballini as he said the prayers of exorcism, to pray the Rosary and to consecrate Ireland and its people to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

The Christmas treeâs origins can be traced back to the 200 ADâs, when the early church father Tertullian wrote:
âYou are the light of the world, a tree ever green, if you have renounced the heathen temple.â
In the 5th to 8th centuries, Christian missionaries were sent from Ireland, Scotland, and England to evangelize the heathen hordes which had overrun Europe.
It was during this time that the courageous St. Boniface (680-755) evangelized the heathen Germanic tribes.
Boniface, also called Wynfred, left his home in Britain, near Crediton, Devonshire, and went as a missionary, sent by Pope Gregory II, to be Apostle of the Germans.
