Victoria strengthens NSW border as state records one new COVID-19 case

Victoria has strengthened its border with New South Wales with Health Minister Martin Foley warning Sydneysiders from red zones risk incurring substantial fines should they enter the southern state. Mr Foley announced an additional 260 police officers would conduct spot checks at the border and said those who contravened such orders could be fined up to $5,000. “The message is simple: Don’t come from NSW’s red zone to Victoria, and for Victorians, do not visit those red zones in NSW,” Mr Foley said. “If you run the risk of coming through the land borders from those red zones you run the risk of substantial fines and being turned round, if not worse,” he said. It comes as Victoria recorded one new locally acquired case linked to the Southbank complex cluster. Mr Foley said the new case was a household contact of a previous case and has been in quarantine throughout the infectious period.
