After a rocky start, a museum and tourist attraction in Bethel will unlock its doors to the public Friday for the third time in 16 months.
The Maine Mineral & Gem Museum is scheduled to welcome visitors, again, tomorrow at 10 a.m. The museum houses 19 interactive exhibits and some 46,000 gems, mineral specimens and even meteorites, including the five largest chunks of the moon on Earth.
Plans began over a decade ago for the museum, but it first opened in December 2019 and quickly grabbed media attention. The Boston Globe called the museum “astounding,” the New York Times said it was “world-class,” and the Wall Street Journal described the MMGM as “a museum that rocks.”

That’s certainly appealing to people who want to lose a lot of weight quickly. But what is this diet, and how does it set itself apart from other commercial plans?
What Is the HMR Diet?
HMR stands for Health Management Resources. A behavioral psychologist named Lawrence Stifler, PhD, developed it over 30 years ago, notes
U.S. News & World Report. It is a low-calorie diet, which is defined as 1,200 to 1,400 calories, and combines portion-controlled HMR shakes and entrées with fruits and vegetables. Also incorporated are a light amount of moderate physical activity and support from peers, such as HMR health coaches and medical professionals.

U.S. News & World Report just put out its annual list of the best diets for weight loss and overall health. They also factor in how easy each diet is to stick to. Here s what they say . . .
1. The Mediterranean Diet is the best overall. It includes a lot of fish, nuts, fruits, and vegetables. But you also get to drink wine, so that s a plus. The DASH Diet and the Flexitarian Diet tied for second.
Shealey offered a quick âthumbs upâ Tuesday while getting his vaccine.
âI feel great after taking the vaccine and Iâm proud to aid in the fight against the virus,â Shealey said in a release from the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs (ADVA).
ADVA commissioner Kent Davis was happy to see the stateâs veterans homes getting the vaccine after being some of the hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.
âWe are very pleased with the planning and preparation that went into rolling out the vaccine today for our residents and staff at the Bill Nichols State Veterans Home,â Davis said in a release. âOur staff and the pharmacy team did an outstanding job administering the vaccine and weâre on track to complete the first round of vaccinations for all four homes by Jan. 11.â
COVID-19 vaccinations in Alabama state veterans homes starting Tuesday

The immunizations with the Pfizer vaccine start Tuesday at Bill Nichols State Veterans Home in Alexander City.
The immunizations will continue over the next two weeks:
Dec. 31 at the Floyd E. “Tut” Fann State Veterans Home in Huntsville.
Jan. 7 at the William F. Green State Veterans Home in Bay Minette.
Jan. 11 at the Colonel Robert L. Howard State Veterans Home in Pell City.
“For several weeks our health care team has worked with the Alabama Department of Public Health in scheduling the vaccinations for our veteran-residents and staff,” ADVA Commissioner Kent Davis said in a press release. “Our medical staff at the state veterans homes is prepared to administer the first and subsequent rounds of the vaccine beginning tomorrow.”
