Arlington Heights snow plows that got a workout in recent weeks are not only mean, but green.
They re among a public works department fleet of just over 100 vehicles and some two dozen other pieces of off-road equipment that fully operate year-round on B20 biodiesel fuel.
Now the village is ramping up its use of hybrid vehicles for the police department with the purchase this week of four new Ford Utility Police Interceptors. They cost $38,221 each, while a fifth non-hybrid vehicle was $35,376 that officials say is needed for the additional cooling demands for a police dog.

Wheeling Township Elementary District 21 has opened a COVID-19 testing site at its district administration building in Wheeling.
In partnership with NorthShore Clinical Labs, the nasal swab PCR tests are offered by appointment for free to anyone in the community.
Appointments, which can be made by calling (773) 570-6510, are within hourlong windows between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturdays. Individuals should bring a state-issued ID, and minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Two men from Chicago were indicted by a federal grand jury for conspiring to commit 12 violent robberies in Chicago and the suburbs, including pawnshops in Arlington Heights, Round Lake Beach and Streamwood, authorities said Wednesday.
Falandis Russell, 25, was in custody Wednesday afternoon, while Terrance Williams, 24, had been released on bond, according to a news release from the U.S. attorney s office in Chicago.
