Keeping It Steady as She Goes: Coast Guard Living Up to Its Three Expectations | Holland & Knight LLP

To embed, copy and paste the code into your website or blog: With President Joe Biden s 100th-day milestone approaching on April 30, 2021, the U.S. Coast Guard is holding a steady course on its expectations, including those related to environmental stewardship, innovation and cybersecurity. (See Holland & Knight Transportation Blog, Steady as She Goes: Three Expectations for the Coast Guard in 2021, Jan. 9, 2021.) In fact, emerging commercial opportunities in areas involving renewable energy, innovative and novel technologies, and alternate marine fuels have already come to surface in the first few months of the Biden Administration. In addition, pending bills on Capitol Hill with a maritime nexus will merit further engagement for stakeholders seeking to help shape future legislation while ensuring regulatory compliance.

Continuing evolution: the LNG carrier of 2030

Advertisement The design of LNG carriers has responded to market changes; next it will need to reflect dramatic increases in efficiency, details Peter Fitzpatrick, VP, Strategy and Development, ABS. While LNG carriers have a relatively short history, they have been subject to a continuous evolution in their design and operational parameters over the last decade. Many of the design changes reflect the natural maturity of the industry, others have come in response to technical, operational and regulatory changes. With vessel sizes having standardised to serve installed terminal infrastructure and with a choice of containment and propulsion systems, it could be that the sector is set for a period of smaller, incremental changes.

Avoid public support for LNG bunkering, says World Bank

Photo: CMA CGM Adopting LNG as a fuel for shipping will cost more than a transition straight to zero-carbon fuels and will bring a moderate but uncertain reduction in greenhouse has emissions, even in ideal circumstances, according to a World Bank report. The World Bank report “The Role of LNG in the Transition Toward Low- and Zero-Carbon Shipping” comapares a future scenario where LNG is adopted as a transitional fuel before adoption of zero carbon fuels to one where the industry moves straight to zero carbon fuels. Zero carbon propulsion solutions appropriate for most of the world s fleet do not yet exist and producing the appropriate fuel will require large scale development of hydrogen production facilities and masses of renewable energy. The necessary technologies exist and are being developed, but marketable solutions are not expected until around 2030.

Congress Set to Discuss Maritime Decarbonization | K&L Gates LLP

To embed, copy and paste the code into your website or blog: Lawmakers have scheduled their first oversight hearing on the issue of decarbonization in the maritime industry. The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee’s Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Transportation is slated to meet on Thursday, 15 April, in a hearing titled Practical Steps Toward a Carbon-Free Maritime Industry: Updates on Fuels, Ports, and Technology. The hearing is one of the first congressional actions that narrowly focuses on the maritime industry, which is projected to be a busy 117th Congress for climate, sustainability, and decarbonization activity. President Joe Biden and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg have both cited climate issues among their top priorities and have called for a zero-carbon economy by 2050. Legislation has been introduced in this Congress that attempts to forge a greener maritime industry (see Title IV of CLEAN Future Act). For more in-depth coverage of this bill,
