Chief Mark Neufeld said the service will be adding the number of teams that patrol various stations during the Calgary Stampede. He said the Downtown Outreach Addictions Program team will also be deployed on transit lines and the number of downtown bike teams will be doubled.

The announcement comes after an officer shot a man at the Sirocco CTrain station after a prolonged standoff on Wednesday. Ten minutes before the initial CTrain call, police responded to a “brazen” daylight shooting in the southwest community of Crestmont. Neufeld said the two weapons complaints do not appear to be connected.

Calgary police said they heard from a transit employee at 1:40 p.m. that a man was seen on board a train with what appeared to be a weapon in his lap. The train was stopped at the Sirocco station and police removed all passengers that were on board, a CPS news release said.

“A man matching the description was located in one of the cars and contained as the sole occupant after the evacuation of the other passengers,” said the release. “The Tactical Unit was called out and worked for a number of hours to try and safely resolve the situation.”

A man is dead and the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating after an early Saturday incident in a west-central Edmonton back alley.
EDMONTON Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating an incident in west Edmonton where a man was shot in an alley during a confrontation with police. Officers were conducting a “proactive patrol” in the area of 152 Street and 102 Avenue around 5:45 a.m. Saturday when they noticed a 50-year-old man beneath a parked vehicle with a saw, Edmonton police said in a release. When officers engaged, police say the man drew a firearm. A confrontation ensued and one officer deployed a Taser. According to police, the man sustained a single gunshot wound but based on preliminary evidence available, it is not believed either of the officers fired their firearm.
