The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating an incident involving Airdrie RCMP and a man who died while in their custody last Monday.
Emergency medical services responded and transported the 24-year-old man to hospital where he died of his injuries.
The homicide section is investigating and an autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday.
If confirmed as a homicide, it would be Edmonton’s 16th of 2021.
Most recently, city police shot and killed a man on Saturday in the Rosslyn neighbourhood. Edmonton police do not include officer shootings in their homicide count. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating the death.
Previous to the shooting, 30-year-old Xavier Chartier died of a sharp force injury on June 2. Officers were called to the area of 98 Street and 78 Avenue in the neighbourhood of Ritchie and found Chartier outside in medical distress. He was treated and transported to hospital where he later died.

EDMONTON - Police in Edmonton say one person is dead after an officer fired their weapon during an alleged confrontation in the city on Saturday night.
