Since the trend of consolidation is and has historically been upward, fewer and fewer individuals or organizations control increasing shares of the mass media in our country. Last month, Federal Education Minister Alan Tudge launched a six month review into teacher education. The review aims to attract and select high quality candidates into teaching and prepare graduates to be more effective teachers.
The announcement was met with criticism from many in the sector. Some education experts have said the review’s focus on teacher education is too limited. Others found it offensive of the minister to suggest Australia’s teachers are not already effective.
But the review is necessary. Its focus complements and adds to the previous review into teacher education in 2014.

Finishing 2020 school year
Minister for Education Dan Tehan has praised Australia’s students, teachers, principals, parents and carers who have completed a school year like no other.
More than four million students went to school in 2020, including more than 321,000 students who started school and more than 236,000 students who completed Year 12.
Queensland and South Australian students will be the first to break, with state government schools closing on the 11th, followed by Western Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory urban on the 17th, then Victoria, NSW, ACT and NT remote on the 18th.
“I’m giving all Australian students a gold star for effort this year,” Mr Tehan said.
