Kiri Pritchard-McLean writes an Old Vic monologue : Other news 2021 : Chortle : The UK Comedy Guide

Gaslighting piece to be performed by Susan Wokoma Kiri Pritchard-McLean has written a ‘funny, dark and ultimately empowering monologue about gaslighting’ for London’s Old Vic Theatre. Chewing Gum star  Susan Wokoma will perform Putting A Face On, which will be streamed for free from March 8 to coincide with International Women’s Day. The Domestic Abuse Bill also enters its report stage in the House of Lords in the same week, and  the theatre says Pritchard-McLean’s piece ‘offers insight into the nuances of emotional abuse, victim-blaming and control’. The Chortle Award-winning comic – who will also direct the work -  tweeted that she was ‘absolutely blown away I get to write for this theatre and this actor,’ adding: ‘Dream job stuff this!’

Zen School of Motoring from battle-rapper Ogmios The BBC has commissioned a new ‘meditative’ comedy based on the ASMR trend. Zen School of Motoring involves battle-rapper Ogmios quietly commentating on what he sees as he drives around North London in his Fiat Panda. Ogmios, whose real name is Ivan Battaliero-Owen, previously made three episodes for YouTube, which have found fans including Alexei Sayle. Now BBC Three has ordered six 15-minute episodes for iPlayer, saying: ‘His journeys take him far and wide, physically and philosophically, but they start and end with his community - going through the same streets, seeing the same landmarks, and characters

Netflix special for Loyiso Gola : News 2021 : Chortle : The UK Comedy Guide

Unlearning taped in his native Cape Town Loyiso Gola has recorded his first full-length Netflix special. The comic taped Unlearning at the Zeitz Museum of Modern Art in his native Cape Town late last year. Now the streaming service has announced that the show, all about him ‘unlearning’ the historic superiority that black people grew up with in South Africa, will be released on March 23. Netflix says: ‘With his sharp observations, satirical wit and philosophical contemplations, Loyiso challenges societal norms and makes you question everything you thought you knew about politics, race and  history.’ Gola previously recorded a half-hour special at Montreal’s Just For Laughs festival, released as part of Netflix’s Comedians Of The World series, and a full-length show in New York, released via Vimeo.

Rose Matafeo gets a Radio 3 platform : News 2021 : Chortle : The UK Comedy Guide

I get to look smart and sophisticated Rose Matafeo has curated a fantasy classical music concert for Radio 3. The stand-up is presenting one of fiveCelebrity Choice editions of Radio 3 In Concert  to air next month. She said the opportunity was ‘a treat, particularly at a time where the shared live concert experience isn’t possible’, adding: ‘It’s also going to make me seem very smart and sophisticated to all of my friends and I will brag about it for years to come.’ Her episode airs on Thursday March 4 at 7.30pm, featuring music from the BBC Experience Classical Archive. Her selection comprises Elgar’s Cockaigne (In London Town), Ravel’s Jeux d’Eau, Debussy’s La Mer. Delius: On  Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring;  Respighi’s Pines Of Rome, Bernstein’s Sonata for Clarinet and Piano; Gershwin’s An American In Paris and the Prelude and Liebestod from Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde.
