The Knoxville City Council approved another step in the VA campus redevelopment project at its meeting Monday. Interim City Manager Heather Ussery says the city officially has local control, and this step will allow for further proceedings.
“This is the 2012 West Pleasant Urban Renewal Plan, which was created in 2012 for the city to hopefully gain local control of the campus moving forward. We’re finally to that point, where we finally have gained local control. As we work through an agreement with Marion County to move forward with the redevelopment, it was important to amend our previous urban renewal plan that reflected that language that will be approved in a 28E agreement.”
Knoxville’s downtown will be assessed this week by members of the Iowa Economic Development Authority Downtown Resource Center. Interim City Manager Heather Ussery says the assessment is an on-site study of the downtown, including a public presentation at the end of the visit and a written report that will help Knoxville administrators with planning efforts.
“We’ll start on Tuesday. There will be five downtown specialists from the Iowa Economic Development Authority. They will start with a tour of the community and downtown. After that, they’ll have consecutive interviews with focus groups Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday, May 6th, there will be a public presentation at the Grand Theater at noon. That’s where the specialists will give their report to the community.”
