New director named at Kingwood Center Gardens
After a national search, Josh Steffen was selected as the next executive leader at the public garden, only the fifth director since Kingwood’s opening in 1953. He will begin on June 14 following the retirement of Chuck Gleaves, who has served in that role for 23 years.
Steffen brings a broad scope of both education and experience with him. Most recently he held the position of horticulture and facilities manager at the Wellfield Botanic Gardens in Elkhart, Indiana, according to a news release from Kingwood.
Work in Creston and Cleveland
Prior to his leadership position there, he was a softscape foreman at Stoney Creek Landscaping in Creston, Ohio, and the Hershey Children’s Garden manager at the Cleveland Botanical Garden. He is skilled in project and staff management, exhibit and landscape design, organizational capacity building and stakeholder engagement, according to the news release.

A Newfields job posting in February included language that the ideal candidate attract a more diverse audience, while maintaining the museum’s traditional, core white audience. That was met with public accusations of elitism and racism.
Within days, Newfields s president resigned and leadership publicly admitted errors and vowed to implement change. Then Darrianne Christian was elected as the new chair of the organization s board of trustees. She is the first Black woman to lead the board.
WFYI’s Terri Dee spoke with Christian about the organization s response to the outrage and her vision that Newfields become known to be a welcoming place for all visitors.
