INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) Until more people get vaccinated and the City-County Council acts, Marion County will keep its mask mandate despite new federal direction that masks are no longer needed by vaccinated people indoors or outdoors.
The director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday issued the new direction. During a COVID-19 task force meeting at the White House, Dr. Rochelle Walensky called the change in mask restriction an “exciting and powerful moment.” She said the science supports the updated CDC guidance that “anyone who is fully vaccinated can participate in indoor and outdoor activities large or small without wearing a mask or physical distancing.”
Marion County Mask Mandate Stands For Now
INDIANAPOLIS Since the beginning of the pandemic, Marion County has marched to the beat of it’s own drum when it comes to COVID-19 safety guidelines. This week is no different, but the result may leave business owners with more headaches as they deal with customer confusion.
The CDC now says fully vaccinated people can go without a face mask, both indoors and outdoors. But in Marion County, the mask mandate will continue.
In a statement, Dr. Virginia Caine, director of the Marion County Public Health Department, says the new CDC recommendation will be examined by the health department. The department plans to also analyze local coronavirus numbers and vaccination data, then present their own recommendation to the Indianapolis City-County Council. That’s when the City-County Council will make their decision on what to change regarding local coronavirus safety guidelines.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) The City of Indianapolis will now spend $150,000 to help immigrants who are seeking legal status. The Indianapolis City-County Council on Monday night approved an ordinance that will allocate the money to pilot an immigrant defense fund.
The money will help immigrants in Indianapolis seeking asylum, or those at risk of deportation with legal information and much more.
“I believe that this is a great change for Indiana and I think we should commend all, everyone, that’s working hard for that,” said Hector Morales, grants coordinator at Central Indiana Community Foundation.
The $150,000 will help immigrants pay for attorney fees, citizenship, and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals applications.
