IndyStar earns three Best of Gannett awards

Staff reports View Comments Three IndyStar projects have been recognized as some of the best work within parent company Gannett’s 260 newsrooms.  IndyStar saw winning entries in public service journalism for “Careless,” investigations with “Mauled: When Police Dogs are Weapons” and individual contributions for La Estrella, IndyStar’s first Spanish-language newsletter.  The companywide contest saw more than 400 entries, all reviewed by 10 outside judges that considered diversity, ethics, teamwork, transformation, creative storytelling and results that empowered communities to thrive.  La Estrella launched in April 2020 after IndyStar’s Natalia Contreras and Daniela Franco Brown saw a need for a Spanish translation of information about the pandemic. Since its launch, La Estrella has raked in more than 1,300 subscribers. 

Indianapolis police say person shot on Beckwith Drive

View Comments A man is dead after police said he was shot Friday afternoon following a “disturbance” at New Bridge Apartments on the north side. Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded about 4 p.m. to a person shot. A man with gunshot wounds was found outside, behind an apartment in the 2400 block of Beckwith Drive.  Emergency medical services pronounced him dead.  IMPD Officer Genae Cook said investigators believe the shooting happened after “some type of disturbance.” The shooter, who police believed to be a man, left the scene.  Investigators are still determining whether the shooter ran or left in a car, Cook said. 

Diasia and Colette Hogan killed in Indianapolis crash

23-year-old Diasia Hogan s life seemed to be just getting started. She gave birth on April 15 to a baby girl named Colette the newest sibling to her other children, 3-year-old Jimari and 1-year-old Pleasant. She bought a car, excitedly texting pictures of the Ford Escape to her sister Danyelle Hogan on April 26. She was recently hired for a new job, according to her cousin Auntaesha Calvert, and she was getting ready to move into a new apartment soon, Danyelle told IndyStar.  But on Sunday, May 2, her morning car ride turned fatal. Police responded to a crash involving two vehicles on North Franklin and Roy roads about 10 a.m. Officers found Diasia dead. The baby was taken to a hospital, but she died the next day.  This little girl fought for her life, Danyelle posted on Facebook. Life just isn’t fair.

IMPD arrests 4 waving guns out vehicle windows, sunroof during funeral procession

May 7, 2021 / 09:37 AM EST INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) During surveillance for a case, Indianapolis police watched vehicles in a funeral procession pass one recent afternoon on a city street. In one of the vehicles, the officers of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department’s Crime Gun Intelligence Center saw men running cars off the road and displaying weapons out their vehicle’s sunroof and windows. Police stopped the car safely at a gas station parking lot at the intersection of South Keystone Avenue and East Raymond Street on the near-southeast side. According to a Facebook post from IMPD, here’s what the officers found in the vehicle April 28:

Dreasjon Reed s mother talks a year after Indianapolis police shot son

View Comments It’s been one long, exhausting year for Dreasjon Reed s mother since her son was fatally shot by Indianapolis police.  It s had no justice or peace, Reed’s mother, Demetree Wynn, said. Indy10 Black Lives Matter invited Reed’s family, friends and allies to Eagle Creek Park on Thursday evening for what they coined “DreDay,” to mark the year since the 21-year-old’s death. Attendees shared condolences about the grim anniversary, and a clear message to defund the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.  “There is still somebody that took my son away, and he still gets to walk the street and go where he go, and hug his momma,” Wynn said. “And my son can’t hug me.”
