New Delhi, Feb 12 (IANS): Indian Army Chief General M.M. Naravane said on Friday that the country s failure to keep its promises on connectivity and security to its neighbours, coupled with China s rising footprints are major concerns for the region. The rising footprints of China in India s neighbourhood and its attempts to unilaterally alter the status quo along the disputed borders have created an environment of confrontation and mutual distrust, General Naravane said during an annual seminar of Assam Rifles and United Services Institution over the evolving security challenges in the Northeast and the way forward.

KM Cariappa - the First Indian to be appointed as Commander-in-Chief of Indian Army
Army Day marks the day when Lt Gen KM Carriappa became the first Indian appointed as Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army. It was back in January 15, 1949, when Carriappa took over as commander-in-chief of the Indian Army from General Francis Butcher, the last British commander-in-chief of India. Apart from that, the day also observed to celebrate the valor and honour those soldiers who have sacrificed their lives for India.

Field Marshal Sir Kodandera Kipper Madappa Cariappa was the first officer of the Indian Army to hold a five-star rank. He had led his troops in the World War II and the first Indo-Pak war of 1947. He received military training during World War I (1914-18).Â

The Indian Army Day is celebrated on January 15 every year to mark the contributions made by the soldiers and the sacrifices done to protect the country and the lives of the citizens. As part of the Indian Army Day celebrations, Gallantry Awards and Sena Medals are also presented to the soldiers. This year, in 2021, India is celebrating its 74th Army Day.
Indian Army Day is observed across the nation with several programmes including parades and other military shows. Although celebrations take place across India, the main parade of Army Day is held in Cariappa Parade Ground at Delhi Cantonment. As part of the main parade in Cariappa Ground, military hardware, numerous contingents and combats are displayed. Last year, Captain Tania Shergill command the Army Day parade. She also became the first female officer to do so.
